Susan’s Reaction to the Book
I really enjoyed reading Be Not Afraid. The book was very well written. I kind of felt like it was Józef himself telling me these stories. It was written in a way that made me come away feeling like I’d had a long conversation with him, and he’d told me all these stories of things that had happened to him throughout his life. I loved that he had examples of how time and time again God had rescued him from certain harm. I found all of his adventures utterly amazing. I just keep reading with amazement about the things that he went through, starting from such a young age! God proved to him over and over that He was right there with him, watching over him and protecting him. I just loved these stories!

Dr. Rob Starner's book Kingdom of Power, Power of Kingdom: The Opposing World Views of Mark and Chariton begins with Dr. Starner's exposure of his own rejection of the meaningfulness of a study of comparative literature of the first century with New Testament writings. But the realization of the encultured nature of the New Testament promoted a further examination. Starner further understood that first-century culture was thoroughly infused with religious ideas and so a comparative relationship between the New Testament and Chariton's novel was possible.
Rising to the challenge of John C. Meagher's critique of Mark's Gospel, Clumsy Construction in Mark's Gospel 1979, Starner suggests that instead of a disordered text and clumsy narrative, Mark's form and style is reminiscent of contemporaneous literature of the first century.
Starner is suggesting that Mark's use of the literary style of Chariton is something like Martin Luther's use of bar room tunes in the writing of hymns. The cadence would be familiar to the contemporary audience even though the message was significantly different. Though stylistically similar, the world views of the two works are dramatically different. Firmly ensconced in the Greek Pantheon, Chariton's work holds no candle to the life of Christ as portrayed in Mark.
This scholarly work is the publication of Dr. Starner's dissertation. This is college to graduate level reading.
